Lip Flip vs. Lip Filler- What’s right for you?

Dermal Fillers at The Aesthetic District in Medford, OR

Lip augmentations have become quite popular over the last decade and many practices offer a variation of services/products, making it hard to determine what your best option is. I’m here to help!

Lip augmentations (aka lip enhancements or lip filler):

  • Uses dermal filler made from Hyaluronic Acid (HA) to add volume to the lips.

  • HA is a naturally occurring substance in our body that lines our joints. This means that most people do not have any kind of reaction to the filler since it is not foreign.

  • Can treat lip wrinkles or lines that occur from aging or smoking, treat an asymmetrical smile, make lips more proportionate and work to hydrate the lips due to the HA’s natural ability to retain water.

  • Gives a more dramatic result than a lip flip but can still achieve subtle results by injecting a lower volume.

  • Appointments will take about twice as long but you can expect to have long-lasting results. (12-18 months)

  • More traumatizing to the skin/tissues, making it more likely that you swell and bruise.

  • Immediate results- you will see the difference as you leave your appointment.

  • More expensive. Prices will range based off geographical location and injector experience but you can expect to pay somewhere between $500-$800. Give or take.

  • Results are reversible. If you are dissatisfied with your results, the HA filler can be dissolved with an injectable enzyme called, Hyaluronidase.

Lip Flips:

  • Uses a neuromodulator such as Botox or Dysport to create subtle height to the lip.

  • A small amount of toxin is placed in the upper lip (about 4-6 units total) and causes the muscle to relax which in turn makes the top lip curl up. This will also reduce the appearance of wrinkles in the upper lip.

  • This is a good option for those who want a subtle change or a more balanced top to bottom lip ratio.

  • If the result of lip filler makes you nervous, trying a lip flip first may offer insight to what it may be like.

  • Show more lip and less gums when you smile. While there is nothing wrong with showing a lot of gums, some choose an injectable option if they have a “gummy smile”.

  • Lip flips are quick once all the paperwork is signed (about 5 minutes) and there is no downtime.

  • Results are not immediate. It will take a couple days to notice a difference and up to 2 weeks for full result.

  • Results last about 3 months and can not be reversed. If you are dissatisfied with the result, you will have to wait for effect to wear off.

  • This is a much more cost-effective treatment. Some will charge per unit while others will charge a flat rate. You can expect to pay $40-$150. Give or take.
